The thermosalinograph (SST and SSS) network continues to grow. This network in the past has been mainly maintained by the French (IRD/formerly ORSTOM), who have concentrated in the western Pacific, although the US (NOAA) and Australia (CSIRO) have in recent times begun expanding their efforts in the Atlantic, Southern and Indian Oceans. Efforts are being made to coordinate these activities in support of collaborative scientific goals.
| TSG | TSG (ThermoSalinoGraph) is an automated Sea Surface Temperature and Salinity measurement system making measurement onboard the ship using a water intake. A conductivity cell and a thermistor cell provide conductivity and temperature measurements. Salinity is derived from conductivity and temperature. The ships position is given by a GPS. A computer usually located on the bridge makes the data acquisition, data processing, recording, and controls the real-time transmission of the data through satellite (e.g. GOES). |

A "Users guide for thermosalinograph installation and maintenance aboard a ship" has been produced by IRD in Noumea. English and French versions are available in electronic form. Use PKZIP 7.0 to decompress files which can then be read using Microsoft Word 97.
Paper copies can be directly ordered to Mansour Ioualalen (ioualalen@noumea.ird.nc), Thierry Delcroix (delcroix@noumea.ird.nc), Christian Henin (henin@noumea.ird.nc), or David Varillon (varillon@noumea.ird.nc).
Also, a CD-ROM entitled "Three Decades of in situ Sea Surface Salinity Measurements in the Tropical Pacific Ocean" by T. Delcroix, C. Henin, F. Masia and D. Varillon is completed. The CD-ROM is based mainly on SSS data obtained through two IRD SOP programs during 1969-1999, with additional data from IRD, IFREMER, PMEL and JAMSTEC research vessels. Details are given in the CD-ROM which is available for any non-profit educational or scientific purposes. Please contact Thierry Delcroix (delcroix@noumea.ird.nc) or David Varillon (varillon@noumea.ird.nc) to obtain copies or follow http://noumea.ird.nc/ECOP/notcd/index.htm link.
