SOOP Monitoring

Annual detailed analyses of XBT line operation are used to prepare XBT sampling coverage diagrams for the Atlantic, the Indian and Pacific Oceans and are helping to keep the international programme focused on meeting the scientific requirements wherever possible. Information is used by SOOP operators to adjust sampling strategies in the light of new scientific understanding of ocean processes and of the expressed requirements, in particular of the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) and the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS). Monthly maps of “pseudo” data density information are being produced to provide a guide to the true data coverage being provided (taking into account decorrelation-scales, etc.).

To monitor the exchange of BATHY and TESAC reports over the GTS, several Data Monitoring Reports are routinely prepared to monitor data placed on and taken off of the GTS by participating countries. The purpose of these various reports is to maximize the amount of data acquired and exchanged globally by finding data exchange problems and solving them.
